Longtime Assemblymember Dov Hikind could be vulnerable in the upcoming September primary, particularly if he decides to take political pot shots at City Councilmember-elect David Greenfield, political insiders said this week.
Hikind staked a lot of political capital in backing Joe Lazar over Greenfield, but in the end couldn’t deliver Borough Park — his stronghold neighborhood.
Hikind’s failure to deliver his nabe for his preferred candidates is becoming a chronic problem. City Councilmember Brad Lander and State Senator Kevin Parker — two other candidates Hikind backed — lost handily in the parts of their districts Hikind controlled.
Greenfield once served as Hikind’s chief of staff, but the two are now engaged in a bitter rivalry. Their relationship is so acrimonious that one top elected official suggested if Hikind backs another candidate against Greenfield, who must run again in September, the Democratic Party might run someone against Hikind.
The Brooklyn GOP is also looking to field a candidate against Hikind, but GOP Chair Craig Eaton stopped short of saying who they’re asking to lead the charge.
