Bronx newspapers endorse Thompson, Katz, deBlasio

BoroPolitics.com

The Bronx Times and Bronx Times-Reporter today endorsed William Thompson for the Democratic nomination for Mayor, Melinda Katz for Comptroller, and Bill deBlasio for Public Advocate.

The weekly newspapers, with a circulation of 36,000, also made endorsements in four Bronx City Council races.

Thompson “possesses an understanding of the city — neighborhood by neighborhood,” the Bronx Times said. He “is thoughtful, capable and enthusiastic [and] has performed well as a two-term comptroller. He won’t deliver radical change.”

After the primary, the Bronx Times will choose between the Democratic nominee and Mayor Bloomberg in the November election.

For Comptroller, the Bronx Times found Melinda Katz “down-to-earth, outspoken, detail-oriented and our pick.”

The newspaper’s choice for Public Advocate, Bill deBlasio “has concrete plans, a stellar resume and the needs of the outer boroughs in his blood.”

In Bronx City Council races, here are the Bronx Times’ picks:

11th CD: Oliver Koppel — an incument who is “tried and true.”

12th CD: Andy King — a “polished and proactive” insurgent who “reminds us of a young Larry Seabrook,” the incumbent the Bronx Times would retire.

14th CD: Fernando Cabrera — who “knows the issues” and is “an arbiter sure to win friends up and downtown.”

16th CD: No endorsement. “Neither [Helen Diane] Foster nor [Carlos] Sierra is our pick.”

The Bronx Times is published by Community Newspaper Group. The endorsements, which appeared in its print editions distributed today, followed 20 political debates and forums hosted by CNG; most of these debates and forums can be viewed at CNG’s BoroPolitics.com Web site.

CNG publishes more than 30 community newspapers in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, as well as the citywide Caribbean Life newspaper. Each CNG newspaper group is making its own endorsements.
