14th Council District candidate Fernando Cabrera picked up yet another significant endorsement on Thursday, August 13, when Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. lent his support to the New Life International Outreach Church pastor.
“It is rare that you have an opportunity to endorse someone that you feel is a perfect fit,” Diaz Jr. said. “The 14th District needs a strong and visible leader, someone who will stand up for its people…Fernando Cabrera is all that the [14th District] needs and more.”
Cabrera is backed by the United Food and Commercial Workers, the Working Families Party, the Dominican Pride Parade, the United Clergy, 1199 SEIU, ACORN and the Bronx County Democratic Party. 1199 SEIU, possibly the borough’s most powerful union, is pouring healthcare worker volunteers into the 14th Council District.
Cabrera lived in the Westchester County town of Pelham and was a registered Republican until 2008. Diaz Jr. and the Democratic Party have sided with the pastor, notwithstanding. Diaz Jr. is a charter member of the Rainbow Rebels.
14th District incumbent Maria Baez, a member of the ousted Democratic Party machine led by Assemblyman Jose Rivera, lost clout to the Rainbow Rebels in 2008 but has won endorsements from City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and former Borough President Freddy Ferrer.
“[Diaz Jr.] has been a strong advocate for working families, an outspoken leader for justice, and a integral part of the renaissance that is occurring in the Bronx,” Cabrera said. I am proud to receive his endorsement.”
14th Council District candidate Yudelka Tapia has secured fewer big-time endorsements but enjoys support from Local 78. She will also count on the Political Parent Party and the Northwest Bronx Democratic Club.
“I have the endorsement of the community,” Tapia declared.
