Idol crooner sings Fidler’s praises

Courier-Life

City Councilmember Lew Fidler got some help from a pair of idol hands on Election Day.

“American Idol” finalist Sanjaya Malakar hit the campaign trail Tuesday in what might be the most improbably political pairing of the year, handing out Fidler’s palm cards since 8 a.m. outside the American Legion Post on Avenue N and East 56th Street, in the heart of the contested 46th District. In a testy race, Fidler was challenged by Republican Gene Berardelli.

Malakar, 20, is from Seattle but is “familiar with Lew’s great work, and is out there showing his support,” according to Fidler spokesperson Reeves Eisen. Turns out, “some of Lew’s campaign workers are Sanjaya’s friends,” Eisen said, adding they were not campaign contributors.

Malakar was a finalist on the sixth season of popular reality show. Known for his outrageous hairdos more than for his musical chops, Malakar advanced to 7th place, thanks mostly to public support, as the performer was not a favorite of the judges. “Lew says he does his voting on voting machines, but if he had been voting for “Idol,” he would have voted for Sanjaya,” Eisen said.
